- FIRST VX-6 UH-1N ARRIVES AT NAS QUONSET POINT RI
-
-
- Here's a photo of the first UH-1N that arrived at Quonset in July, 1971. This is from
the DF72 cruise book, pg.11, caption: "Spirits were high when LCDR Blackwelder and
LCDR Kinsey flew two new helos back to Quonset Point from Fort Worth, Texas. Upon arrival,
the VXE-6 Helo Crew Marching Band was on hand for a welcome home."

Gaffer: What is your professional assessment of the Helo welcoming band?

- Uncle Billy,
I was in attendance when this particular event took place. Well, off to the side,
but there to witness it. Ah yes, a grand welcoming indeed. The down side was, the tubing,
being played as a makeshift trombone by the sailor on the right, had been ripped from
another helo in the rush to get the band together. The bird didn't fly for another two
days until they dried it out and reinstalled it on the down bird. On another note, this
ceremony illustrates the poor treatment the Helo Crew got.
- When the new Hercs arrived, the CO arranged for the Navy Steel Drum Band to be on hand.
They banged out a stirring rendition of Stars and Stripes Forever on the chrome plated
shit cans. The flight crew ran around to the back of the hanger, got in to their cars, and
hauled ass to the Marine Club. Another great moment in the squadron's history.

- A blurry picture of 158235 on its side in December 1973 at Cape Crozier. It was
blown over by estimated 90 mph winds.
- It was salvaged by a team that traversed the same hazardous path over which
